High Roller: The Stu Ungar Story – Addiction or Not?

If a person is a skilled gambler, there are chances that he is aware of the name Stu Ungar. He is an award-winning gambler who conquered a lot of media attention for winning a range of trophies and titles. Previously during his time, he was a common name among the contestants of tournaments hosted for gamblers where he started getting recognized for his skills. Soon after people started to identify him as an exemplary gambler. Eventually, he was getting known for his high rolling skills which are the predominant ways that fetched all these awards.

Digging deep into his past we can tell that his gambling skills are not based on his luck but that he followed the footsteps of his father, a bookmaker by profession and the proprietor of Fox’s Corner Bar. He studied the ways of a gambler from the very childhood which eventually led him into excellence. In his childhood, Stu has always prioritized gambling over his academics. This eventually led him into underage gambling which although added to his experience but forced him into an unsupervised path.

Speaking about his career, it went uphill initially but it came crashing down when the same skill backfired when he was diagnosed with addictive gambling issues. His entire life took a hit. The situation worsened and he ended up not being able to support his family.

The Plot of High Roller: The Stu Ungar Story

The storyline of the film revolves around the life of the professional gambler. The story unfolds as a flashback as Ungar, in his final days, trying to narrate his life story to a stranger he met. The story highly focuses on his drug usage including the cocaine abuse and the crumbling office married life.

The film takes the viewers through his high time and extravagant victories in gambling tournaments, his interpersonal relationships, and how his addictive tendencies to gambling and cocaine brought an end to his flourishing life. It reaches an end where the lifeless body of Stu was found inside a motel room by the housekeeping service lady.

About the Film

High Roller was released back in 2003 starring Michael Imperioli as Stu. It features many well-known gamblers as cameo actors like Andy Glazer, Vince van Patten, and Al Brenstein. The awards backed by the film include Nashville Film Festival Audience Choice Award Best Featured of 2003, Prism Awards Commendation of 2004, and San Diego Film Festival Award for Best Direction in 2003.

Films like this although come as a form of entertainment to the viewers it acts as a cautionary tale behind their heads while indulging in activities like gambling.

Consequences of Gambling Addiction As Seen in the Movie

There are noticeable differences between the activities of a seasoned gambler and a person who is addicted to a gambling lifestyle. The display of addictive behaviour is often quite clear as a lot of associated troublesome attitudes are linked to it. These behavioural elements are not very unclear if someone takes time to notice the facets of the behaviour. Most of these gamblers are seen rapidly losing property and possessions. This can also be reflected in the family life of these gamblers. One of the commonly associated traits can be failed marriages and broken families.

Apart from that, gambling addicts are also seen to unknowingly harm their interpersonal relationships by dragging monetary transactions in between. Not only that they are bombarded with massive amounts of debts but advanced loans from friends and family. It results in spoiled relationships. Needless to say, although gambling gives people momentary satisfaction and a feeling of being under control, it ultimately takes away a lot more than it gives back.

Is Gambling Addiction Reversible

To get over compulsive gambling urges and to completely curb addictive gambling, one requires to first understand the root cause of it and why it appeals to the gambler. In spite of knowing the fate, gamblers immerse themselves in the activities. For example, many UK players use non-UK casinos via https://www.nongamstopbets.com/non-uk-casinos/ where they spend their spare time.

They know it would cost them property, bank balance, and interpersonal relationships, Yet people find it impossible to convince themselves about the illusion of false rewards. It requires rehabilitation and constant self vigilance to start over and continue an addiction-free life.

Conclusion

Although we love the adrenaline rush, deep inside we know what harm gambling is capable of. It taps into a highly addictive tendency we have and leaves people with no control.

Gambling can cause lots of harm which brings us to the conclusion that it is better to seek help as soon as problematic behaviors are noticed and follow healthy gambling standards.

RIP Rutger Hauer: From Blade Runner to Blind Fury

Action movie legend Rutger Hauer has died. Let’s look at his ultimate career…

Oh man, just a month after the passing of one of the most ultimate action movie bad guys of all time in Billy Drago, we have sad news that Rutger Hauer, perhaps even a more prolific action movie bad guy (and good guy) has passed away. Confirmed by a report in Variety, Hauer has died on July 19th, 2019 at the age of 75. His funeral his being held today on Wednesday July 24th as he passed in his home in the Netherlands.

RIP Billy Drago: The ULTIMATE Action Movie Bad Guy

Rutger Hauer’s Action Movie Career

Hauer will be most famously remembered as the ultimate bad guy villain Roy Batty in the original Blade Runner film opposite Harrison Ford. However, for many ultimate action movie fans, Hauer was a terrific journeyman of action playing a variety of bad guys and at times even leading star. His action movie credits include Hobo with a Shotgun, The Blood of Heroes, The Osterman Weekend, Sin City, Nighthawks, and The Hitcher.

Amongst many other roles across television and film throughout his forty year career. He compiled over 175 IMDB credits in his time.

The Most Villainous Bad Guys in Ultimate Action Movie History

Blind Fury

But perhaps his greatest ultimate action movie accomplishment might have been the delightfully awesome and absurd role as Nick Parker, a blind, sword-wielding Vietnam POW veteran, who stars in Blind Fury. A comedic samurai buddy adventure similar to Stallone’s Over the Top might not have been Hauer’s biggest claim to fame, but for die hard 80s and 90s action movie fans, it will always stand out for its crazy premises as well as Hauer’s deft performance balancing comedy and action so perfectly.

The 5 Most Ultimate Moments from Blind Fury

RIP Rutger Hauer!

We’ve truly lost an action movie legend today. Rutger Hauer’s legacy will live on as one of the single greatest bad guy performances ever, as well as one of the biggest champions of 80s and 90s action that will die a little today with his loss. We’ll miss you Rutger!

Almost Ultimate: How ‘Law Abiding Citizen’ Couldn’t Quite Cut It

Gerard Butler and Jamie Foxx go mental for each other in ‘Law Abiding Citizen’ (2009).

Alright, to be perfectly honest I only recently watched Law Abiding Citizen because, while scrolling on Amazon Prime, I thought it starred Steven Seagal. Turned out it was just a squinty eyed Gerard Butler on the cover with Jamie Foxx, and by the time I realized my mistake I was a good 30 minutes into the movie and was already hooked.

From a brilliant opening, to some solid Fincher-esque cinematography and a tight plot (at first), Law Abiding Citizen slowly turns into one of the most disappointing finishes of all time – and very well could have been a worthy action franchise in its own right if it had just stayed true to its guns.

The Best Ultimate Action Movies of 2019 (So Far…)

Se7en Meets Death Wish

2009 is not the greatest year for ultimate action movies, but damned if director F. Gary Gray and writer Kurt Wimmer didn’t find a way to sneak one in to an era where action absolutely had to be thematically tied with other genres like crime, thriller, or much worse… romance.

I’ll keep referencing David Fincher’s Seven (aka SE7EN) as its John Doe protagonist appears to be what Law Abiding Citizen’s Clyde Alexander Shelton’s (Gerald Butler) character is at least in the vein of.

But for action fans, the vigilante revenge plot will be familiar enough, it just has a much darker added twist. Which is cool at first, but man does it fail to deliver the goods eventually!

Top 5 Most Unlikely Actors to be Cast in an Action Movie

Jamie Foxx and Gerard Butler

It’s hard to say who the true “star” of the film is, essentially Jamie Foxx is the good guy and Gerard Butler is the bad guy, but for most of the film Butler might appear to be the “hero” in the action movie sense as he’s the one exacting the vigilante vengeance.

I’d say they’re both solid performances, although the tone seems to be off in some scenes. The style of the film goes from procedural to thriller similar to Tony Scott’s Enemy of the State for sequences. It also feels similar to other action thrillers of the time like Michael Mann’s Collateral – which also stars Foxx against Tom Cruise in similar roles, to a degree.

80’s and 90’s Action Stars That Are Classically Trained Actors

SPOILERS: How the Ultimate Let-Down Ending

And man, for a movie with a tight and engaging a first act as I’ve seen in just about any modern actioner, Law Abiding Citizen absolutely falls apart at the end. Well, holdon, let me retract that a bit. It falls apart at the very, very end. The beginning of the third act starts promising enough. We’re getting to the endgame and the stakes are raising nicely.

But then, Foxx receives his hero’s journey elixir in the form of… an email? And blam! Tables turned! Now we have Foxx discovering the inner workings of Butler’s diabolical plans and systematically disarming them one by one.

Only to set up a final showdown for the ages where… the two guys talk. For a few minutes. Then one explodes. I get that the movie was more about wits than brawn, but damn man. Couldn’t we have at least seen a major psychological showdown.

Overall it felt wrapped up way too quickly and with way too nice of a bow on it to tie everything together. PLUS, I can’t help but think if it had been Steven Seagal instead of Gerard Butler what kind of ultimate showdown we would have had. Or just throughout the film, to see Seagal acting like a criminal genius always one step ahead would be hilarious and awesome.

Hollywood, let’s make it happen with the reboot in 2025!

Sylvester Stallone Says ‘Rocky’ to Ride Again in New Film and TV Series

Mandatory Credit: Photo By SNAP / REX FEATURES FILM STILLS OF 'ROCKY IV' WITH 1985, DIRECTOR DIRECTS, SYLVESTER STALLONE IN 1985 VARIOUS NO MERCHANDISING 1985, DIRECTOR DIRECTS, SYLVESTER STALLONE

Stallone opens up about his Rocky Balboa past and future in new interview.

Apparently the most prolific period of an action movie star’s career isn’t in one’s early 20s or 30s, it’s clearly in the mid-70s for the great Sylvester Stallone. In an recent interview with Variety, Stallone shares some very interesting insights into his Rocky film career (and just what a huge amount of money it has made him over the years).

The Italian Stallion continues to tease and openly talk about making more Rocky movies – as well as a potential prequel TV series. Let’s try to unpack everything we can from this most recent interview and what it could mean for one of the most ultimate action / sports franchises of all time!

How Sylvester Stallone Shaped the History of Action Movies with Rocky (1976)

Rocky Rides Again

The biggest quote from the Variety piece comes from the prodding question: “Any possibility that “Rocky” would reappear on the big screen someday with you in the role?” To which Stallone replies:

“There’s a good chance that “Rocky” may ride again.”

Because of course Rocky has to ride again! Look at his John Rambo character about to keep his wild ride going in Rambo V: Last Blood coming out this fall. And even that Stallone has yet to truly rule out even another Rambo movie after this “Last Blood” one.

As for a plot for this potential Rocky 7, Stallone offers up this bit of information (which he’s mentioned before at Cannes).

“Rocky meets a young, angry person who got stuck in this country when he comes to see his sister. He takes him into his life, and unbelievable adventures begin, and they wind up south of the border. It’s very, very timely.”

When asked if the story would “touch on the immigration issues in the U.S.” that are in the news today, Stallone continues:

“Yes. Do you tell someone that you just met in the street who’s struggling and homeless to get out, or do you take him in? If you take him in, you’re in trouble.”

A Rocky TV Series

And not to let the news of his own desires to do another Rocky feature film, Stallone also commented on rumors of a Rocky prequel TV series (most probably on a streaming platform) along with original Rocky producer Irwin Winkler. Stallone, on his conversations with Winkler:

“There was some conflict there, yes. He felt in his mind that “Rocky” was primarily a feature film, and he didn’t see it as being translated for cable, so there was a big bone of contention.”

And as far as when these projects might come to fruition? Well Stallone says, “They want to go tomorrow.”

Stallone Keeps Hitting

So, if we were to theoretically build out Stallone’s action movie schedule for the next few years, that leaves us not only with another Rambo movie after his upcoming Rambo 5. But also a Cobra TV series, a Demolition Man sequel and possible a Cliffhanger reboot too!

And who knows, maybe even after Stallone finally gets too far gone to act in more movies himself, he can always superimpose himself in later as well – as we’ve seen with these recent and creepy Deep Fake videos of him in Terminator 2.

Quentin Tarantino Reportedly Considering a ‘Kill Bill 3’

‘The Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’ director talks rekindling franchise with Uma Thurman.

While he is best known as a heavy-handed homage artist to classic cinema, arthouse / mainstream film writer and director Quentin Tarantino has worked on the edges of ultimate action throughout his modern filmmaking career.

And while the majority of his movies do contain action scenes and elements, it’d have to be his Kill Bill franchise that has its most classic roots with as the two films heavily pastiche both martial arts and kung fu cinema as well as continue on the legacy of vigilante revenge stories.

Now, on the heels of his latest feature Once Upon the Time in Hollywood, which again is not an action movie per se, but does contain action in parts, Tarantino has revealed some surprising information regarding another Kill Bill movie.

The Best Ultimate Action Movies of 2019 (So Far…)

Uma Thurman and Tarantino Together Again

After some years apparently spent estranged, Tarantino and his frequent muse/collaborator Thurman have apparently been in talks regarding a third installment of their Kill Bill movies. (Although Tarantino reportedly considers them only as one film.)

In an interview with Josh Horowitz on the  Happy Sad Confused Podcast, Tarantino had this to say:

“Me and Uma have talked about it recently, frankly, to tell you the truth. I have thought about it a little further. We were talking about it literally last week. If any of my movies were going to spring from my other movies, it would be a third Kill Bill.”

Which confirms that a “discussion” has been taking place at the very least.

How That ‘Top Gun 2’ Trailer is Tom Cruise’s Ultimate Tower Buzz

A Rumored Kill Bill 3

A lot of factors would need to fall perfectly into place for this one. Perhaps the biggest would be Tarantino’s true desires to revisit the franchise. He’s also stated many times that he wants to retire after 10 films, and depending on your counting of the Kill Bill movies as one or two films, he’s either done now or has one left.

Which also has long been rumored to be a Star Trek feature he’s been toying with for quite awhile.

But Who Will Kill Bill?

The other question would be where and when a Kill Bill Chapter 3 could even take place. Bill has been defeated in Kill Bill 2. Although Tarantino’s writing style lends itself well to him making up some crazy plot device to bring him back (or revisit the past just as easily).

For now, we for those action fans who enjoy Tarantino’s work (and perhaps not so much for those who dislike the postmodern pastiche stylings over just enjoying the classics for themselves), we can keep an ear out for any developments. But let’s not let our heads roll!

The Best Ultimate Action Movies of 2019 (So Far…)

DAC_D27_04417.jpg

Featuring the likes of Mel Gibson, Keanu Reeves, and Iko Uwais!

While we can all agree that the best days of ultimate action movies are behind us, beautifully nestled in our golden memories of the ‘80s and ‘90s, we have to say that the greatest genre known to mankind still continues ultimately on.

2019 has actually been a pretty surprisingly solid year so far. In large part to the emergence of Silat martial arts star Iko Uwais and the great hard-genre productions of Cinestate. Both with several entries on our list.

So, if your VCR is broken and you absolutely can’t watch King of the Kickboxers for the 99th time, here are some of the best action movies of 2019 to consider.

The Top 100 Ultimate Action Movies of All Time

John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum

Easy pick, right? The John Wick franchise has been one of the best mainstream action movie success stories in decades. On the strength of Keanu Reeves hyper-violent stylings, John Wick 3 keeps the tradition strong with another solid offering that probably goes more over-the-top ultimate than all the rest.

Shoutout to UAMC legend Mark Dacascos for stealing the show as the loveable bad guy.

UAMC Reviews: John Wick Chapter 3 – Parabellum #1

UAMC Reviews: John Wick Chapter 3 – Parabellum #2

Dragged Across Concrete

Mel Gibson and Vince Vaughn make an unlikely duo, but it’s Gibson and Tory Kittles who steal the show in Dragged Across Concrete. Along with solid performances by modern ultimate action movie mainstay Michael Jai White and the studly cerebral writing and direction by S. Craig Zahler.

Like all Zahler’s work, it’s more of a slow burn than mega-action hits, but it’s gritty fights and shootouts represent some of the genre’s best in years.

Mel Gibson and Vince Vaughn Get Tough in ‘Dragged Across Concrete’

Avengement

If there’s one action movie star going in 2019 that might be able to make it back in the ‘80s, it has to be Scott Adkins . From his over-the-top movies to his over-the-top physique, Adkins is ultimate action personified. Avengement is classic revenge flick action cinema that has somehow found a way to be fresh and new in 2019. And in our full review of Avengement, we must acknowledge that Adkins is truly at the top of his game in 2019.

10 Ultimate Reasons to Watch Scott Adkins’ ‘Avengement’

The Night Comes for Us

The Night Comes for Us was originally conceived as a screenplay, before being turned into a graphic novel, before being turned into a standout martial arts action film on Netflix. Iko Uwais and Joe Taslim star in this Indonesian action thriller that combines style and violence perfectly. As with most modern action, it can get quite bloody!

The Night Comes For Us: The Iko Uwais Action Movie Scoring Big On Rotten Tomatoes

The Standoff at Sparrow Creek

While technically a film that came out straddling the line between 2018 and 2019. (Plus we technically first reviewed it at Fantastic Fest ’18 which you can read here.) We’ll include The Standoff at Sparrow Creek as a 2019 film as it sort of flew under the radar tail end of last year. But don’t be fooled, this might be one of the smartest and most intense action thrillers in the past two decades.

More Reservoir Dogs than a typical shoot ‘em up whodunit, Standoff is a boiler room powder keg simmering pot of a film that is always one spark away from blowing your minds off.

UAMC Exclusive Look at ‘The Standoff at Sparrow Creek’ (2019)

Triple Threat

We sure do like Scott Adkins and Iko Uwais, but we also really love us some Tony Jaa, Michael Jai White, Michael Bisping and Tiger Chen too! So of course in Triple Threat, with this ensemble cast, it’s hard not to be ultimate and awesome, but throw in Jesse V. Johnson’s direction and action sets and it’s probably the absolute best of the year!

Triple Threat: An Ultimate Martial Arts Movie for the Ages

We Die Young

Jean-Claude Van Damme still continues to churn out the action titles even a good twenty (or thirty) years past his prime. But man what a prime it was, and on the strength of his legacy, we have to include one of his films and give him the chances he deserves.

A gritty action crime thriller, Van Damme does more than an admirable job making We Die Young into a solid actioner worth checking out.

UAMC Review: Jean-Claude Van Damme’s ‘We Die Young’

The Dark Soul

We gotta shout out our boy Kevin Brewerton for the Kung Fu murder Mystery The Dark Soul. While not as much action as some might want, it features a former kickboxing champion who can punch up any movie and perhaps may make Brewerton into a relevant action movie name in the future.

How That ‘Top Gun 2’ Trailer is Tom Cruise’s Ultimate Tower Buzz

Tom Cruise Top Gun: Maverick Paramount Pictures

Tom Cruise looks to keep his ’80s action legacy alive with Top Gun: Maverick.

At this point, why not just pencil in sequels for all of your ultimate ’80s classics. Tom Cruise, never one to let a buck fall short in front of him, has finally pushed his Top Gun sequel to fruition. And, just like Cruise’s Pete “Maverick” Mitchell likes to do after a mission, this first trailer is certainly causing a major tower buzz.

10 Examples of How ‘Top Gun’ is The Ultimate ’80s Action Movie

Top Gun 2: Maverick Trailer

Honestly, while this may be great news for Top Gun fly-boys (and there are many who still hold Top Gun up as THE ULTIMATE ’80s MOVIE), it’s amazing how much this movie looks note-for-note like the original. It might as well be a CGI shot-by-shot remake similar to The Lion King or the other Disney re-imaginations.

Tom Cruise rides his motorcycle next to a jet taking off. They croon for the ladies at the piano bar. I mean is Goose going to come back just so he can die again. WARNING: Spoilers in that last sentence!

Keeping the ’80s Dream Alive

But heck, we still got to give it to the man. Tom Cruise has somehow found a way to keep his 5-foot 1-inch frame in the ultimate action movie genre despite mostly being known for his ability to run really intensely. And Top Gun isn’t necessarily pure action in any form, but it is a military film and features some pretty high octane dogfights.

It’s more commendable from a UAMC perspective really just for its Kenny Loggins soundtrack and ’80s machismo personified with Maverick and Iceman.

The Most American Action Movies to Watch on the 4th of July

Will it be Good (or Ultimate)?

The consensus so far from the trailer release seems to be that everyone is HYPED about re-living the ’80s nostalgia and seeing some awesome fighter jet action. And that’s probably all we’re going to get, but no one seems to care.

On paper it seems like a terrible idea to revive the franchise so many years later, but Hollywood is definitely doubling down on bringing back the greatest hits, so who are we to complain if it at least forces us to re-watch some of our favorites before hand to get pumped – or after to wash the bad taste out.

Top 5 Most Unlikely Actors to be Cast in an Action Movie

JUDGE DREDD, Rob Schneider, Sylvester Stallone, 1995

From Bruce Willis in ‘Die Hard’ to Rob Schneider in everything…

Often when I watch old action films, I have two thoughts. One: Wow I totally forgot that person was in this. And two: why is this person in this? I realized that in most of my favorite flicks they have a casting choice that seemed surprising at the time and most of them still are surprising. So with that thought in mind I compiled my Top 5 list of most unlikely actors to be casted in an action movie.

80’s and 90’s Action Stars That Are Classically Trained Actors

1) Richard Dawson in The Running Man (1987)

First off, this is a film that also features Mick Fleetwood and Dweezil Zappa. The two of them don’t even turn your head like the host of Family Feud. Yes, he technically was in a few old war movies like The Devil’s Brigade and King Rat, but he will always be the smooth-talking game show host my Grandmother had a crush on. I’m not going to go as far as saying that it he was born for the role and he gave a perfect performance, the type that makes you think that there is no possible way you can ever top that performance so you might as well quit acting. But he did never act again after The Running Man. Just saying.

The 10 Best Arnold Schwarzenegger Ultimate Action Movies!

2) Wayne Newton in The Adventures of Ford Fairlane (1990)

No this isn’t just a list of guys who my Grandmother had a crush on who played a villain in one of my favorite films. Or movies with surprise Rockstar cameos (Morris Day, Vince Neil, Sheila E and Tone Loc to name a few). Mr. Las Vegas makes this list because the guy that most of us knew for the song Danke Shoen in 1963, was notably the guy your parents would go see on Vacation while they played penny slots so they could get a free watered-down rum and diet. But then for some reason in 1990, someone thought “What if we make a film where Andrew Dice Clay fights Wayne Newton”? Then someone gave that dude money to make it happen!

Remo Williams: Fred Ward as America’s James Bond

3) Wilt Chamberlain in Conan the Destroyer (1984)

But Wilt was awesome in that film! And he was taller than Arnold! How can you say it was a surprise?! I agree. But name another film he was in. I’ll wait. And no, I don’t know if my Grandmother had a crush on Wilt. But 20,00 women tell me that she probably did.

Arnold Schwarzenegger Still Wants to Make a ‘King Conan’ Movie

4) Rob Schneider in Knock Off (1998), Judge Dredd (1995), Demolition Man (1993) and Surf Ninjas (1993)

Were they comedic roles? Yup. Are you surprised every time you remember that Rob Schneider did two films with Stallone? Yup. Are you surprised that Knock Off is a film where Van Damme is a fashion designer who joins forces with the CIA to fight terrorism with the guy from Surf Ninjas? Yup! And are you surprised that Surf Ninjas is about a surfing teen and kid brother with super powers where one had the power of being a badass fighter and the other had the power to see the future in his Game Boy, and for some reason a 30-year-old Rob Schneider was their friend?

Probably not, it was the 90’s. Before you tell me Surf Ninjas wasn’t a Classic Action film, it was if you are in your mid 30’s and spent Friday nights at Blockbuster. Also Tone Loc was in Surf Ninjas. Also my Grandmother did not have a crush on The Animal.

How Do The 3 Seashells in ‘Demolition Man’ Work? 3 Ultimate Theories!

5) Bruce Willis in Die Hard (1988)

You need to remember that before Die Hard, Bruce Willis was known for the TV program Moon Lighting. The show where the most suspenseful plot was “Are they going to kiss ever”!?!?! Unless you happened to be watching TV in 1984 and caught Season One Episode 7 of Miami Vice and thought to yourself “That drug dealer who beats his wife would make a really good barefoot cop who throws guys out of windows”.

You didn’t. Also, fantastic episode, watch it. Matter a fact go binge Miami Vice after reading this. Not a movie, but if you’ve never watched it and like all these movies mentioned above, you’ll love it. Yes, my Grandmother had a crush on Bruno. If you don’t know what I mean by Bruno, check out the music video for Respect Yourself by Bruce Willis. Do it before the binge.

The Details Behind Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Scrapped Cameo in ‘The Predator’ Has Been Revealed

On paper, Shane Black’s plans for ‘The Predator’ sounded like an ultimate action movie slam dunk.

It starred Narcos actor Boyd Holbrook as the leader of a ragtag bunch of PTSD-suffering soldiers going up against two of the titular alien hunters.

But somewhere along the way, things went wrong, with the resulting movie an incoherent mish-mash of ideas that showed occasional glimpses of brilliance but proved mostly mediocre.

And yet, it could have been so different.

The Top 100 Ultimate Action Movies of All Time

An Arnold Schwarzenegger Cameo

Rumour had it that the original Predator star himself, Arnold Schwarzenegger, was being lined up for a return to one of the franchises where he first made his name.

Alas, Dutch Schaefer never made his comeback but that hasn’t stopped fans from wondering what it would have entailed or whether it would have been enough to save a sorry mess of a movie.

Now writer Frank Dekker, who co-wrote the movie with Black, has lifted the lid on what they had in store for Schwarzenegger, had he signed on the dotted line.

UAMC Investigates: The Story of Jean-Claude Van Damme as the Original Predator

“Come with me if you want to live.”

We very much wanted him in the film but what we had written was a cameo that would have spring-boarded into a major role in any sequel,” Dekker told Moviefone.

He decided it wasn’t enough of a role and nobody was willing to put money on the possibility of a sequel. He would be taking a pay cut. He would have said, ‘Come with me if you want to live’.

Shane had a talk with Arnold but at the end of the day, the sequel wasn’t a done deal and this is really not a lot of screen time for Arnold to go and fly to Canada and do a half day.

Dekker added: “[The] thing I said is, ‘We have to have Arnold Schwarzenegger in this movie.’

“Because, like it or not, one of the master strokes of The Force Awakens is that ending. Because even though Luke doesn’t do anything except turn around and have a beard, it touches that little nostalgia button in you and you go, ‘Oh cool.’

“And then you go to the credits and there’s no way that movie’s not going to be a big hit. Even though there’s not a single original thing in it, all it is just Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back combined and you switch it around a little bit and you change characters, but there’s not a single moment in that movie where I go, ‘Oh, that’s an interesting, cool thing.’ Because I saw it all before.

“I love these movies so I know them pretty well. And I know when you’re showing me something from another Star Wars movie. Hollywood doesn’t like to do that these days. They want to just trot out. This is why there’s so many remakes that we don’t need.”

Arnold Schwarzenegger Releases Predator-Inspired ‘Dutch Bourbon Whiskey’

He Could Have at Least Gotten to a Choppa

Back in 2018, Shane Black opened up to Yahoo about their Arnie-shaped plans for the film.

“There were a couple of ideas to include [Arnie in The Predator], mostly in the third act,Black told us.

“And the studio wanted, I think, something a bit fresh, that didn’t rely on solely on Arnold’s reemergence, but they were open to the idea to the notion of having him in, in a smaller role.”

“I was fine with that, but it did present a problem, because when you call Mr. Schwarzenegger you don’t want to say: ‘Hey, we got this smaller role for you if you want it?’. I felt embarrassed to ask him, right?”

“He said: ‘Well, if I was featured more, yeah, but what you’re suggesting is that you’re creating this new thing and just using me to bless it.’ And so [I said], ahem… yes. And so I was not surprised when he said: ‘Look, I wish you luck, but that’s too small a role for me’.”

Given that, despite poor reviews, The Predator earned $160 million at the box office, we aren’t ruling out an Arnie return just yet. Get him to the chopper!

The Best Action Movies From The 80s and 90s Set In New Jersey

New Jersey is a cultural hotspot that has evolved through the eras: it’s a state with a rich history and intense politics and home to many iconic artists and actors such as Whitney Houston, Buzz Aldrin, Paul Simon, Frank Sinatra, and Bruce Springsteen.

New Jersey is also home to a great many wonders such as the iconic Atlantic City, the popularised tourist hub lined with casinos and entertainment venues galore. Really, it’s no surprise that the glamour of New Jersey is said to have been the inspiration for the US edition of Monopoly. The appeal of gambling hasn’t been deterred by recent events as, in 2020, it’s known that New Jersey bettors wagered around $996 million in December and a staggering $6 billion in total. Perhaps this is because finding a New Jersey online casino is very easy, with comparison sites like Bonusfinder compiling lists of casinos with existing free money bonus offers and no deposit bonus codes.

With an array of notable celebrities and exciting locations under its belt, including the glitzy glamour of Atlantic City, it’s perhaps no surprise that New Jersey became a popular backdrop for many Hollywood blockbusters, especially action movies in the 80s and 90s. While movies previously were set in hotspots such as Los Angeles or New York, New Jersey became the setting for several classic titles with all-star casts, including Cop Land which featured award-winning Robert De Niro.

In this article, we’re going to explore a few of the best action movies from the 80s and 90s set in New Jersey.

The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension (1984)

Released in 1984, The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension is a cross between the action-adventure and science fiction genres. The film, shortened to Buckaroo Banzai, follows a physicist who tries to save the world by defeating aliens from Planet 10 in New Jersey. The movie has since been adapted into comics and video games, owing to its loyal cult following, and has put New Jersey on the map for something other than being the home of Springsteen.

Lock Up (1989)

Lock Up is a prison action film set in Gateway Prison, a maximum-security prison in New Jersey. The film features Sylvester Stallone and Donald Sutherland. Lock Up follows Frank Leone, played by Stallone, who is taken forcibly to Gateway Prison after upsetting the warden at a low-security prison. The movie brought in $22 million at the box office, but Stallone later recalled it wasn’t performed with enough maturity to have an impact on his career. Respectfully, we disagree.

Cop Land (1997)

Cop Land is a crime-action drama that boasts a star-studded cast of Sylvester Stallone, Robert De Niro, and Ray Liotta. The movie follows Stallone, a small-town sheriff from New Jersey who has to confront corrupt NYPD officers who live in the community. Fittingly, the movie’s soundtrack includes songs from Bruce Springsteen’s The River album.

What’s Entertainment Like In New Jersey Today?

When people think of top filming locations or movies based in major cities, the mind still tends to drift straight over to the likes of Los Angeles or Vancouver, Canada. However, New Jersey deserves to be on this list. It’s been the location of several iconic actions films in the 80s and 90s and will inevitably serve as the backdrop for many up-and-coming film titles.
