How James Bond Was Able To Help Turn The Century In ‘The World is Not Enough’

The World is Not Enough‘: For Bond, it Never is…

In November 1997, Barbara Broccoli, a producer of the James Bond franchise and the daughter of Albert Broccoli, the longtime Bond film producer, was watching a Nightline news report. She saw how it looked at the major oil companies of the world and their seeking to control Caspian Sea oil reserves that were untapped. This was happening within the years following the collapse of the Soviet Union. Broccoli and her stepbrother, Michael G. Wilson, another producer on the Bond franchise and stepson of Albert Broccoli, decided to hire Neal Purvis and Robert Wade to author the script.

The two writers decided to focus on a female villain this time around. While Joe Dante and Peter Jackson were initially offered the chance to direct the film, the honor went to Michael Apted after Broccoli lost interest in Jackson. Apted’s wife at the time, Dana Stevens, did an uncredited rewrite of the script to increase the power of the female characters while Bruce Feirstein, who worked on Tomorrow Never Dies and GoldenEye, strengthened the Bond character’s narrative arc during his rewrite. The title, The World is Not Enough, came from the Bond family motto that was present in the Ian Fleming Bond novel, On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, and its subsequent film adaptation.

How ‘GoldenEye’ Set the Foundation for a Post-Cold War Era James Bond

An Assassination Turns to a Boat Chase

Bond is a reflection of us in many ways. He represents the need for adrenaline but also the fast-paced secret agent life we’ve come to expect from the James Bond films. He’s who we would always want to be if we had the opportunity. Who would not wish to be arriving in Bilbao, Spain to get money for a British oil tycoon like Sir Robert King? The dream would be a great opportunity like new door and window sensors. Nobody would turn it down. That is until things take a turn for the worse. The money is booby trapped and it kills King in an explosion following Bond’s attempts to find out who killed a fellow MI6 agent from the banker’s assistant in Spain. Soon, as any of us would, Bond starts to chase his assassin. Bond offers to help her and says he can protect her.

It’s become something that is always present in many of the Bond films. He always seeks to help those who are in trouble or danger. Whether he means to or just does it to get the upper hand, you can never say he simply moves straight to his license to kill unless his life is in danger. Even when a friend like King is killed, Bond still seeks to assist in lifting the burdens of another’s life. It’s here where we get the first sense of Victor “Renard” Zokas, the antagonist of the film. A former KGB agent turned terrorist, he has a bullet in his brain that makes him impervious to pain as it continues to kill off his other senses before it will kill him. The assassin says Bond cannot protect her from Zokas.

This sets up a set of expectations the audience has about this antagonist. He is, perhaps, the deadliest foe Bond has encountered and might not succeed in defeating. If you think such a villain is dangerous, some of the twists and turns this film takes will not only leave you shocked but shaken and stirred too.

The Smart and Poignant Action of James Bond and ‘Tomorrow Never Dies’

Taking Over The Family Business

In the wake of King’s death, Bond turns to the next person in charge of the family business: Elektra King. Unfortunately, she is living proof of how evil Zokas is: he previously abducted her. Much to Bond’s ignorance, he also made her fall in love with him. Zokas turned the Stockholm syndrome situation to his advantage and gained an ally in his quest for tyranny. As Bond receives the assignment from M, he heads out to Azerbaijan, where Elektra is. In a great nod to On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, Bond and Elektra find themselves in battle against a hit squad. They are riding on snowmobiles and Bond is able to defeat them. Bond is able to stop them now but at what cost? He has already lost Elektra to the enemy and he does not even know it yet. This soon leads Bond to visit someone he has a history with.

How ‘Thunderball’ Set The Stage For The Modern Age of James Bond Action

Visiting An Old Friend

It has been a little while since we last caught up to Valentin Zukovsky. If we remember Zukovsky, Bond gave him a limp previously and helped him against Alec Trevelyan during the events of GoldenEye. These two men do not wish to see one another but fate seems to bring them back again and again. It’s proof of coincidence as much as irony in the world of intelligence. Bond gains intelligence from Zukovsky at the latter’s Baku casino and he finds out that Davidov, the head of security for Elektra, is working with Zokas. Bond kills Davidov and takes his place on a plane headed to a Russian ICBM base in Kazakhstan. At this point, Bond sees Elektra in danger and innocent of the events thus far in the movie. However, his ignorance will be broken soon and he will have to come to terms with the past impacting the future.

Why ‘GoldenEye’ is The Ultimate ’90s James Bond Movie

It’s Christmas Time

While posing as a Russian nuclear scientist, he meets Dr. Christmas Jones, an American nuclear physicist. It’s not too soon after that they find themselves doing battle with Zokas in a silo. The terrorist is attempting to remove the weapons-grade plutonium and GPS locator card from a nuclear bomb. During these events, Bond begins to realize a dark and dangerous truth: Elektra might not be as innocent as she is playing up in these events. She could be working with Zokas. He finds this out when Zokas says Elektra might be working with him. It’s shocking to hear this from Zokas. During these events, Bond and Jones begin to grow reliant upon one another as they brave danger together. Bond and Jones are able to escape the silo that explodes with the locator card. The danger is just getting started for our heroes.

Why Licence to Kill is the Most Ultimate James Bond Film

The Evil is Finally Revealed

After Bond tells M that Elektra may not be as innocent as she claims, Bond and Jones discover that a stolen bomb from Kazakhstan is attached to an inspection ring going toward the oil terminal, which pushes our heroes against the clock in deactivating the bomb. Jones finds half of the plutonium is missing from the bomb and they brave more danger as much of the pipeline is destroyed. They are presumed to be dead but Bond never lets up. Even in You Only Lives Twice, Bond finds a way to succeed in the end. He’s able to win the day but not before M is kidnapped by Elektra. She has revealed her plans and she is indeed working for Zokas. It’s definitely a deadly case of Stockholm syndrome.

Pre-Bond Brosnan Goes Ballistic in Taffin (1988)

Working With Zukovsky to Seize The Day

Bond makes his way back to the Caspian Sea, where he and Jones visit his old friend, Zukovsky at his caviar factory. They seek more information on Elektra but are then attacked by her sawing helicopters. She’s aware of what Bond is up to and doing with Jones. Zukovsky, apparently, had an arrangement with Elektra, which was in exchange for using a submarine that is captained by Nikolai, the nephew of Zukovsky. Here, Jones has a realization: if Zokas inserts the stolen plutonium into the nuclear reactor of the submarine, such a nuclear explosion could destroy Istanbul and leave Elektra’s oil pipeline uncontested after sabotaging the Russians’ oil pipeline in the Bosphorus.

Bond gains a signal from M with the locator card M activates in the clock battery. Bond and Jones find themselves captured by Elektra’s henchmen, where Bond is taken to the tower and Jones aboard the submarine. This is to separate the two from working together. However, Bond faces the worst. He is tortured by Elektra and the interaction between them is as sad as it is heartbreaking. To see Bond have to face a friend is thematic of the Pierce Brosnan Bond films in many ways except for Die Another Day, where there is no betrayal of friends whatsoever. What’s just as touching is the death of Zukovsky as he is shot by Elektra, dying after freeing Bond with his cane gun. Bond frees M and kills Elektra tragically.

Remo Williams: Fred Ward as America’s James Bond

The Smash Finish With Christmas in Turkey

Freeing Jones, Bond kills Zokas in the submarine’s reaction room. In intense fashion, Bond uses a plutonium rod to finish his foe off. Bond and Jones are able to escape with the torpedo launcher as the reactor floods and detonates underwater. Perhaps, calling back to From Russia With Love, Bond finds himself once more with a beautiful and smart dame in Turkey, likely Istanbul. It’s here something happens that makes M embarrassed when they attempt to catch up with 007. It is not surprising at all he is doing such a thing but M expects better from him. Like Bond though, you can never guess what antics he’ll be up to next. With Pierce Brosnan as Bond, this marks one of the finest installments.

He plays up many emotions with Sophie Marceau’s Elektra. It becomes a tragic affair and these two push the film further, along with Judi Dench’s M. Denise Richards does an admirable job as Jones in what she was hired to do. Sure she has some awkward scenes but that’s how her character was written too. It’s a good film and one that is scary, warning us not only of the challenges and temptations of our 21st century and society but taking us to new heights and reminding us of old ones in this film.

10 Ultimate Reasons to Watch Scott Adkins’ ‘Avengement’

Why you should watch the great Scott Adkins deliver some ‘Avengement‘ (2019).

British action legend Scott Adkins (Doctor Strange, Accident Man, Boyka: Undisputed) is out on bad behaviour in the tense and action-packed Avengement, and it’s a must-see.

While granted leave from prison, Cain Burgess (Adkins) evades his guards and returns to old haunts to take revenge on the people that made him a cold-hearted killer. It’s an epic, bloody battle to search for the soul he lost years ago on the streets of an unforgiving city.

Finally making its way to the UK, we give you 10 reasons to watch this stunning new action-thriller and why it’s one of the best of the year…

Top 10 Scott Adkins Action Movies

1) Scott Adkins off the Leash

Adkins has made a career out of playing anti-heroes, flawed badasses who we can’t help but root for. Just look at Boyka in the Undisputed films, Casey in Ninja: Shadow of a Tear, Martin in Savage Dog and French in The Debt Collector. These are tough characters with the weight of the world on their shoulders. In Avengement, Cain is one of his best characters and Adkins has been critically praised for a strong and rich performance, alongside his predictably high-quality action.

Scott Adkins is the Modern Action Renaissance Man in ‘Avengement’ (2019)

2) The Transformation

Getting into this character, Adkins went through a physical transformation and great makeup effects to become the (literally) battle-scarred beast who emerges from prison. Cain is a physically terrifying individual with napalm burns on his face and a grill of metallic teeth. You wouldn’t sit next to him on the night bus!

Savage Dog: An Awesome Revival of Cannon Style Badassness

3) The Team

Adkins holds his own opposite a top cast including Craig Fairbrass (Gerard Johnson’s Muscle), Nick Moran (Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels), Thomas Turgoose (This is England), Kierston Wareing (Fish Tank), Louis Mandylor (The Debt Collector) and Leo Gregory (Green Street), all under the eye of stuntman-turned-director Jesse V. Johnson (Triple Threat, Accident Man) who clearly enjoys using eclectic character actors in his films.

Triple Threat: An Ultimate Martial Arts Movie for the Ages

4.) The Director

Jesse V. Johnson is a veteran stuntman with credits spanning the classic Total Recall, Starship Troopers and Charlie’s Angels through to Lincoln and Hell or High Water. What does this mean? He’s seen and whole done a lot and is very experienced in the movie business. Watch his earlier directorial work in The Butcher and Charlie Valentine and he’s a super talented filmmaker. He also made the star-star-studded martial arts extravaganza Triple Threat! In Avengement, again he shows his ability in telling compelling stories which appeal to a genre audience.

Scott Adkins Finds His Ultimate Form in ‘Boyka: Undisputed’ (2016)

5) The Music

Composer Sean Murray has worked on Adkins films such as Accident Man and The Debt Collector, as well as the Call of Duty video game franchise and many more. His stylish score for Avengement mixes a cool 80’s synth sound which feels reminiscent of John Carpenter with notes of Ennio Morricone. It’s an impressive, catchy soundtrack and it’ll be stuck in your head for days.

Scott Adkins Channels his Inner-Van Damme in ‘Hard Target 2’

6) The Action

We’ve long been familiar with the flashy, flamboyant style of Adkins on camera, injecting plenty of cool spinning kicks into his fights. In Avengement, there’s tight knit choreography but it’s driven by some extremely hardcore scraps, especially during the prison sequences. Working with stunt coordinators Dan Styles (Eliminators) and Luke Lafontaine (The Debt Collector) the action is top notch and something stylistically different for Adkins to sink his teeth into.

Scott Adkins in Ninja 2: Shadow of a Tear (2013)

7) The Violence

Coupled with the action, there are scenes which might shock the easily offended, and we’re talking serious ‘look away and wince’ moments [no spoilers]. Alongside the great Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning, this could be Adkins’ most violent film yet and, when he’s getting payback against bad people, it’s actually pretty cathartic!

UAMC Review: Jean-Claude Van Damme’s ‘We Die Young’

8) The Prison Montage

There are many impressive scenes but one which stands out is the equally exciting and tragic prison montage scene, which shows Cain’s life-or-death daily struggles in prison and serves as a snapshot for why he needs to get the hell out. Great action, great cinematography and Sean Murray’s score, all united and as filmic as you can imagine.

Accident Man: Scott Adkins as a Comicbook Action Hero

9) The Structure

One of the most interesting aspects of the story is the disjointed narrative. In the same way Pulp Fiction sucked you in with out of sequence storytelling, this adds a huge layer of mystery and makes the audience anxious to find out more about Cain’s journey and what’s in store at the end of his quest.

UAMC News: ‘John Wick’ Directors Looking to Helm ‘Bloodsport’ Reboot

10) The Pub Scenes

In the dual narrative, we see Cain landing in prison through flashbacks while he keeps hoodlums of the Horse and Jockey pub hostage, and his back-story is revealed. In the pub scenes, we see Cain as the fully formed ‘monster’ and are eager to find out what happened to bring him here. There is plenty of sharp, snappy dialogue between Cain and his reluctant, gobby hostages. Thomas Turgoose’s Tune is bound to be a fan favourite in these scenes. It culminates in an insane and violent finale which has to be seen to be believed, so get ready.

The House: Gambling From The Other Side

Released in the year 2017, The House, an American comedy flick shed some light on the secret casino experience with a dash of comedy. Needless to talk about the comic portions of the film as the cast includes Amy Poehler and Will Ferrell as lead actors! It is written and directed by Andrew J Cohen on how the lead characters wind up at an underground casino in order to accumulate enough funds for getting their daughter through college.

The Plotline

The story starts with the lead characters Scott, played by Ferrell and Kate, played by Poehler convincing their daughter to join the alma mater that they were once a part of. They pointed out the evils of college life and convinced their daughter to get admission into the university. The family lived with a false idea of college funding and expected the community scholarship program to cover the expenses. Later on, it was found that the scholarship program was cancelled by the city counsellor in order to create a community swimming pool.

The couple tries out various ways to accumulate the college fund. This includes asking for a loan, seeking a raise in salary, and even working extra time. Kate tries to get a job but ultimately none of it could work. Later on, a neighbour convinces them to try out desperate measures like gambling in order to extract the money to fund their daughter’s college. The family itself has been affected greatly by the evils of addictive gambling but our protagonists found no way out but to try out desperate actions. Without spoiling the film for the readers, it can be said that they plan a trip to Las Vegas which documents Scott and Kate through the astonishingly glamorous backdrop of the Las Vegas casinos.

They ultimately could get no favour out of it. They eventually decide to start their own underground casino and this embarks the start of a bumpy ride for both Scott and Kate and their business partners as well, and for the ending, the protagonists successfully earn enough to pay off their daughter’s college fees.

Psychological Aspects of Gambling

There are several psychological aspects that are directly connected with problematic gambling and your need to know what you should do. The area of the brain that is connected with the reward system is evidently less sensitive in the case of compulsive gamblers. Some gamblers are into it out of apathy for their regular lives and this intense desire to engage in self-destructive habits like gambling acts as an escape option from the monotony of their lives. Eventually, they get so involved and dependent upon such behaviours that even when there is no positive outcome.

Again, this trait can be linked with personality disorders like extreme risk-taking personalities, narcissism, stimulation seeking, issues with impulse control, etc. Gambling has been linked with various cognitive biases which makes people not only overconfident but naive. The illusion of control that a punter gets on trying out gambling gives a false sense of victory leading them astray. This unrealistic optimism often gives rise to a state called the gambler’s fallacy in which every occurrence is clouded by unrealistic beliefs.

Measures to Restrict Gambling

Behavioural treatments, self-help, and strategic treatments can effectively reduce and restrict gambling tendencies excessively. Some of the ways are listed below.

  • One of the best-known treatments with good levels of efficacy includes motivational interviewing of a compulsive gambler. The professional that conducts this interview brings out the urge and the feeling of resolving the issue by engaging the patient in a conversation focusing on the freedom of choice.
  • Support from peer groups can also be a valid method of treatment aiding the recovery. Reliability is a major factor in recovering from any behavioural trouble.
  • Self-help is one of the absolutely necessary steps of natural recovery.
  • Another major factor, gamblers all over the world consider is the self-exclusion schemes. Plenty of programs are available throughout countries like Canada, Australia, France, UK, USA to serve the gamblers in need. Early detection and seeking help from the self-exclusion services can result in the prevention of major losses. GamStop is one of those self-exclusion schemes for UK residents which works with players and provides limits on UKGC sites. Nevertheless, GamStop players still have full access to free casinos not on GamStop – https://www.nongamstopslots.com/free-spins-no-deposit-no-gamstop/, and play various games.

Conclusion

Although films add the seasoning of entertainment in daily lives, if watched carefully, almost every time it carries some subliminal messages that one can take away from it. The film might have high comic levels but leaves a lingering caution about engaging in any real money gambling experience.

Most of the gambling-related movies are documented in our reviews on the basis of the thriller element, whereas The House takes a different route to convey the same messages yet keeping the entertainment factor intact.

How Steven Seagal Nearly Landed the Role of Batman

Anybody seen The Joker? I’m gonna keep comin’ back until someone REMEMBERS seein’ The Joker.

The casting of Michael Keaton as Batman and Bruce Wayne in Tim Burton’s deliciously dark Caped Crusader movie was controversial, to say the least.

Known more as a comedic actor at the time, Keaton’s arrival on the project prompted a glut of angry complaints from comic book movie fans who flooded Warner Bros with letters protesting the decision.

And yet, as outlandish as casting Keaton may have seemed at the time, things could have been even stranger if some of those working behind the scenes on the movie had got their way.

COPYCATS! Batman (1989) vs. Black Scorpion (1995)

Was Steven Seagal Almost Batman?

According to the film’s screenwriter Sam Gamm, some other even more unusual names were floated to play the Dark Knight – including a certain Steven Seagal.

A rising action star at the time, someone at Warner Bros. apparently viewed Seagal as the perfect person to play what would be a physically demanding role.

Steven Seagal and Michael Caine Share Contrasting Memories of ‘On Deadly Ground’

Steven Seagal Rises

Hamm told SyFy Wire:

“There were a lot of people at Warner Brother who wanted to cast it with an action star. They wanted to cast the part as Batman, as opposed to casting it as Bruce Wayne. You have to make Bruce Wayne work, because Batman is, for the most part, going to be a stunt guy, or it’s going to be somebody running around in a costume in long shot. You don’t need the martial arts expertise of, say, Steven Seagal or somebody like that because you can fake all of that kind of stuff. Seagal was one of the people that was suggested to us.”

A Case for Under Siege Being Seagal’s Greatest Action Movie

An Ultimate Action Movie Superhero

A skilled martial arts master, Seagal was seen as an intriguing option for the film. And though it never came particularly close to happening, Hamm admits it was a genuine point of discussion:

“Believe it or not, he had just kind of appeared on the scene, people thought holy cow, this guy’s badass. He could be Batman. I don’t think it ever got to the point where he read for it. He was just one of the names that was floated.”

Ultimately the role went to Keaton, who excelled in playing the duality of Wayne and his dark superhero alter ego. Could Seagal have pulled off the same feat?

One thing is undeniable: he would have kicked ass as Batman.

RIP Billy Drago: The ULTIMATE Action Movie Bad Guy

Billy Drago Dead

Honoring the legendary villain from many UAMC classics.

It is with an ultimately heavy heart that we share the news that UAMC legend Billy Drago has passed away at the age of 73. As reported on Deadline, Drago passed away Monday June 24th in Los Angeles where he lived. No word on the cause of death has been shared.

While most film fans will remember Drago for his roles in The Untouchables and the television show Charmed, we at the UAMC fondly remember Drago for his numerous ultimate appearances in 80s and 90s action movies.

The Top 10 Chuck Norris Movies of All Time

Remembering Billy Drago

The most notable that come to mind are his forays up against Chuck Norris in two of the most ultimate Chuck Norris movies of all time: Invasion USA (1985) and Delta Force 2: The Columbian Connection (1990).

And while he might have been the second fiddle bad guy in Invasion USA (although he arguably stole the show in his role), his performance as Ramon Cota in Delta Force 2 is stuff of UAMC greatness.

In fact, we ranked his role a top 5 selection in our Most Ultimate Bad Guys of all Time.

However, Drago proved to be a successful action movie journeyman with hundreds of credits in both movies, TV and some very awesome direct-to-video classics. Just to name a few, he had roles in Cyborg 2: Glass Shadow (1993), Martial Law II: Undercover (1991), Hero and the Terror (1988) and Walker, Texas Ranger the TV series.

Even at the time of his death, he has several roles in projects which are still in various stages of production.

This one hurts, we’ll always remember ya, Billy.

The Matrix Reboot: Michael B. Jordan, the Wachowskis and… Keanu?

Here’s the ultimate scoop on the ambitious reboot to ‘The Matrix‘ (1999).

Originally released on March 31st, 1999, The Matrix was probably the most ultimate action movie phenomenon of the century. Much like the John Wick franchise which it inadvertently helped created (with stunt coordinators who worked on The Matrix re-teaming with their main iconic star) Keanu Reeves brought all the cross-genre stylings of late-night martial arts meshed with neo-punk sci-fi and some pretty heavy artillery pure action to boot.

Now, after two mega-blockbusters sequels and several other iterations, Joel Silver and Warner Bros. appear finally ready to bring the franchise back for an official reboot. Here’s everything we know so far – including the involvement of the original directors, a budding A-lister to star, and… Keanu?

The 5 Best Fight Scenes from The Original Matrix (1999)

The Wachowskis Are Attached

According to a reported interview with John Wick 3 director Chad Stahelski on Yahoo Movies UK, it is his understanding that The Wachowskis – after years of being either on the fence or left out of the equation completely – appear to finally be attached.

“I’m super happy that the Wachowskis are not just doing a Matrix, but they’re expanding what we all loved. And if it’s anywhere near the level of what they’ve already done, it wouldn’t take more than a call to go, ‘Hey, we want you to be a stunt guy’ and I would probably go and get hit by a car.”

To be fair though, conflicting reports have come out since as to whether or not this means anything as major as the siblings directing a reboot, or rather just lending their creative input in some capacity. Still, as the ultimate world builders in this equation, one would hope that they would at least be involved in some role significant enough to help bring their vision behind original to a new project.

Michael B Jordan to Star

It’s also long been rumored that Michael B. Jordan will be the star of the reboot. (Although to be fair, it might not even be a “reboot” but perhaps a sequel or prequel.) Jordan’s Outlier Society Productions are reportedly gearing up to produce the film along with Warner Bros to confirm his involvement. Jordan’s role as a Neo-esque lead is interesting as it so closely echoes some of the original actor choices for The Matrix – most notably reports that Will Smith was strongly considered for the role of Neo before he turned it down.

Will Smith Shares Why He Turned Down Lead in ‘The Matrix’

This Matrix reboot is apparently operating under the working title of “Project Ice Cream” and is ramping up to begin production in Chicago in early 2020. Screenwriter Zak Penn (most notable for Ready Player One) is reported to have already begun on the script.

Assassins: How the Stallone Action Thriller Inspired The Matrix

Will Keanu Reeves be in The Matrix Reboot?

That’s the big question at least from a UAMC perspective. In many ways, he already has been the star of The Matrix spin-off reboots in his John Wick franchise, which owes so much to The Matrix in its world building, style and genre. It might be a little tricky to involve Keanu’s character if it is indeed a direct sequel as Neo (if you even remember at this point) finishes his Jesus narrative by dying for the sake of humankind at the end. But, as with any sci-fi universe, it wouldn’t be too hard to at least write the man in for a cameo.

He could be Michael B. Jordan’s sensei! Or fill in as a Morpheus-type character, which would admittedly be pretty awesome.

Black and Blue Trailer: Proof Frank Grillo Maves Every Movie Better

Naomie Harris stars in BLACK and BLUE.

Just give the man his own ultimate action movie franchise already!

Sony pictures has just released the first trailer for the action-thriller Black and Blue starring Naomie Harris, Tyrese Gibson, Mike Colter and Frank Grillo.

Harris leads the film as a rookie cop who catches a group of cops killing a young drug dealer on her body cam. She works with Gibson to put an end to these corrupt cops and post the incriminating footage.

Netflix Drops Action-Remake Trailer for ‘Point Blank’

Black and Blue (2019)

The trailer is heavy-handed making sure that audience is reminded several times that the key element to the movie is Harris’ internal struggle between her loyalty to her community and her police family. This is incredibly deflating as the trailer already makes it clear which side she will choose. They also suggest she only has 12 hours to upload the damning footage. It’s unclear why this arbitrary number is in place.

The Raid Remake: Director Joe Carnahan Reveals Key Plot Details

Frank Grillo is on an Ultimate Tear

Otherwise, the trailer is strong. Harris dominates the proceedings and sells herself as someone more than capable of carrying a movie. This initial taste of the movie also features some good action; good sense of place (establishing the split between the cops and the community) and Grillo makes every movie better.

Black and Blue will debut in theaters October 25th.

UAMC Review: Jean-Claude Van Damme’s ‘We Die Young’

Van Damme hits his marks, but this modern actioner fails to live up to its ultimate roots.

Jean-Claude Van Damme has developed the kind of brand that allows him to experiment with his role choices. We Die Young is a clear example of this experimentation. Van Damme plays Daniel a mute, ex-marine with a drug addiction who suffers from painful bouts of PTSD.

Daniel remains an enigma throughout the entire film but manages to be one of its most compelling elements. The central focus however is Lucas (Elijah Rodriguez) a young gang member who spends his time regretting his affiliations or trying to escape them.

We Die Young is available to stream on Amazon Prime here.

UAMC News: ‘John Wick’ Directors Looking to Helm ‘Bloodsport’ Reboot

The Van Damme Effect

Surprisingly, their interaction is much less than I expected. A bulk of the film features them apart nullifying any chance at a meaningful relationship. Van Damme spends most of his time brooding, fighting off flashbacks and walking with his girlfriend Anna (Joana Metrass), who has virtually nothing to do in this movie.

Despite his obvious limitations I enjoyed him in this film as well as The Bouncer, another recent effort. Rodriguez is palatable as Lucas but tends to feel very one-note and struggles to escape this frustratingly dull characterization.

First Trailer for Jean-Claude Van Damme’s ‘The Bouncer’ Hits the Internet

A Typical Action Movie

The movie also falls into countless macho clichés happily embracing stereotypes like the jealous second in command, Jester (Charlie MacGechan), the constant posturing and devil-may-care attitude gang members possess as they race into battle. A few elements such as an overzealous, young gang member border on comedic.

The gang’s leader Rincon (David Castaneda) struggles to escape these clichés but is undermined by the director’s unwavering interest in his countless facial tattoos. He does pull through with a few strong moments though suggesting there’s something more beneath the surface but anything more is never explored.

The movie’s action beats are staggeringly underwhelming and only add to its list of problems. An early chase scene is well done combining fluid camera movements and easy-to-follow geography. This pursuit is small but winds up feeling incredibly satisfying. Everything else heavily relies on handheld camera-work and choppy editing. Sometimes the action is easy to track but most of the time you get lost waiting for the frame to slow-down enough for you to catch up.

Watch: Rare footage of Jean-Claude Van Damme Fighting For Real

Not JCVD’s Strongest Effort

Moreover, the story shoehorns in some pseudo-political elements. The action takes place in Washington DC in a neighborhood that is a mere 20-minute bike ride from the White House. A dubious claim at best. Additionally the movie squeezes in conversations about immigration issues but these instances never have anything concrete to say. This surface level inclusion feels as tacked on as most of the elements of this movie.

While an admirable diversion for Van Damme but like Daniel it never has anything interesting to say. We Die Young is available to stream on Amazon Prime here.

The Making of ‘Cobra’: Behind the Scenes with Sylvester Stallone

Watch a rare glimpse into the making of the ultimate action movie classic Cobra!

It’s been well documented that Sylvester Stallone’s Cobra is one of our favorite ultimate action movies of all time. (In fact, check out our Top 100 list – it’s number 1!) By 1986, Stallone had already enjoyed some enormous successes with both his Rocky and Rambo franchises, and yet Stallone was out for another ultimate conquest by introducing the world to Marion Cobretti in Cobra.

Produced by The Cannon Group aka Cannon Films, Stallone’s Cobra became the tough guy, strong arm of the law cop which would dominate the action movie lexicon for the rest of the 80s and 90s (and still into present day).

In a rare glimpse, this behind-the-scenes documentary features some insights into Sylvester Stallone’s character development, as well as a look into George P. Cosmatos‘ direction and co-star Brigitte Nielsen’s work.

Stallone Trying to Bring ‘Cobra’ Back as a Streaming Series

The Making of Cobra

Via Retro Reels (more vintage videos here)

Sylvester Stallone had been toying around with a tough guy cop script idea for some time before Cobra finally came to fruition. With ideas used from his re-drafting of the original Beverly Hills Cop (which Stallone was attached and reworked the script for, but ultimately left the project), Stallone’s Marion Cobretti was eventually fleshed out based on icons such as Clint Eastwood’s Dirty Harry and Charles Bronson’s Death Wish vigilante.

“Marion Cobretti aka Cobra. He is kind of like what I call the bottom line in police enforcement. You might say he’s a modern day gunslinger.”

We get to see Stallone on set in Marion Cobretti mode icing bad guys and chewing his match sticks to splinters.

AWSOM 50

We also get some cool shots of Cobretti’s 1950s Ford Mercury with its iconic vanity “AWSOM 50” license plate, which was actually owned by Sylvester Stallone. According to wikipedia, “The coupe had a 350 cubic-inch Chevrolet engine, outfitted with a blower for added horsepower, a Hurst automatic shifter and a 400 hydro transmission with a shift kit. The car could go from zero to sixty miles per hour in four seconds and hit speeds of 140 miles per hour.”

In total, three of the Cobra cars were created for the film’s stunt work, each designed differently for the types of shots and stunts needed.

Cobra’s Ultimate Legacy

Since Cobra’s release over both the film and Sylvester Stallone’s ultimate legacies have grown exponentially. Stallone has recently gone on record indicating that he’s always regretted not making Cobra into a franchise like his other films. As well as his long-held desire to make Cobra into a TV show (or streaming show these days). Besides being #1 on our UAMC Top 100, Cobra is easily a top choice for our Sylvester Stallone Top 10.

So, check out the video above then why not dive into watching Cobra again for the 110th time! We know we will…

Netflix Drops Action-Remake Trailer for ‘Point Blank’

Anthony Mackie and Frank Grillo to star in remake to 2011 French actioner.

Netflix just debuted the first trailer for Point Blank an action-remake of the 2011 French film of the same name. The movie was written by Adam G. Simon (Man Down) and directed by Joe Lynch (Everly, Knights of Badassdom).

This time the film centers around Paul (Anthony Mackie) who is forced to work with a dangerous criminal, (Frank Grillo), to rescue his kidnapped, pregnant wife.

How ‘Point Break’ Perfectly Balances Ironic and Sincere Awesomeness

Anthony Mackie and Frank Grillo

The trailer takes a while to find its rhythm, starting off rather emotionless but eventually it does a nice job highlighting the charisma of its two leads and the heavy action quotient. The button at the end of the trailer notwithstanding I am on board for this movie.

It’s been a while since Mackie has been in anything that allowed his talents to shine (his Avenger cameos don’t count) but I recently enjoyed Grillo in another Netflix film Wheelman.

But will it be Ultimate?

The French film this movie is based on was an excellent showcase of frenetic energy, high-paced storytelling and well-engineered tension. With any luck this remake will manage to capture that same tone and the two leads give me hope that some of that magic may find its way into this version.

This latest offering from Netflix will be released on July 12th.
